LR6
I
just replaced a recessed 75-watt incandescent spotlight
with a comparable LED light from WattWorks (Goodale
Blvd, Columbus) and the result exceeds our expectations.
http://www.wattworks.com/LED%20LR6.htm
It looks great, gives off more light than the old
bulb, uses WAY less energy (12 watts instead of 75
watts; that's 83% less), and we will NEVER have to
replace it (50,000 hrs of life, or more).
Plus....
we did not have to tear out any of the old fixture.
This new one slips INSIDE the old fixture. Of course,
since the old fixture is recessed, you cannot see any
of the old part.
Plus...
Recessed light fixtures are not sealed air-tight,
meaning you are losing a LOT of air through the old
fixture - in both the summer and the winter. When I
removed the incandescent bulb, I sealed the inside
of the old fixture air tight (I used duct tape and
silicone caulk) before I inserted the new LED. And,
I did all of that sealing from inside my home, not
from up in the attic (heck, in some situations, you
can not even get to that top side of the fixture through
an attic). Leakage of air through recessed fixtures
is a major energy loser. Those old recessed fixtures
needed the air to flow up and out because of the heat
of the incandescent bulb. No such flow is needed with
the LED because it generates so so little heat. After
the new LED's been on for a long time, it's still totally
cool to the touch.
Of course, the initial investment of purchasing the
LED replacement is bigger. But...
1. you never have to replace light bulbs again (OK,
maybe after 50 years),
2. you save energy (burn less coal or nat gas, less
pollution),
3. you spend a lot less money to operate it over the
50+ years,
4. you get more illumination (brightness),
5. when you purchase it from WattWorks, you are making
Central Ohio more sustainable by supporting a local
business, more of whose dollars stay in the community
than when you buy from big box or mail order,
6. you are saving energy because this LED light is
made of 100% recycled aluminum and it contains no mercury
(unlike CFLs) and
7.
you eliminate air (energy) leakage (burn less coal
or nat gas, less pollution, less money to heat & cool
home) . Fred
